Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi often referred to as â€Å"Bapu† was born on October 2, 1869. He was brought up in a middle-class family where his father, Karamchand was chief minister of Porbandar where Gandhi was born as well. Gandhi was highly influenced from his mother, Putlibai who would fast on daily basis, which explains why Gandhi believed in fasting as well. He grew up around having Muslim and Christian friends. At the age of 13, he had an arranged marriage with Kasturba and later had four sons with. Although Gandhi’s father wanted him to become a government minister, Gandhi was more interested in becoming a doctor. In fact, he went to study law abroad in London. Though all the struggles trying to adapt the western culture, he later became an attorney of law. The film Gandhi shows different religious beliefs of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians as well as Gandhi’s journey of non-violence. As it starts out Gandhi being thrown out of the train on the way to South Africa, which shows discrimination towards Hindus for the first time in the film. Concept of the Underclass free essay sample

The concept of the underclass As a lone parent myself, I have quickly realised over the years that there seems to be a prejudice towards certain types of individuals within our social stratification. Views that if a person is from a specific background will therefore fall into a certain bracket, suggesting then he or she must therefore be a certain type of person, with a not so flavoursome outlook on life. Facing lone parenthood is by far in my opinion, one the most hardest tasks anyone would have to face, but to then be labelled as well as a ‘scrounger’ or a ‘strain on society’ is it itself unfair, especially as early research shows there was initially very little evidence to sustain these allegations. Why then without any hard evidence, or justification, did the larger proportion of society decide that the reason the country was in financial turmoil was because of a group of individuals that did not fit within their ideology of the working class? History shows that there has always been a group of individuals that did not fit into any of the social structures; they were the homeless, the lone parent, the unemployed, the disadvantaged. In the 1900’s there were the work houses, today there are the refuges places for the poor and homeless to take shelter and get back on their feet, yet how easy is to get out of the lower bracket of the social structure? Charles Murray (1990,1994) stated that, * Single parents * Those who do not want to work or the unemployed * Those making a living from crime Define the underclass, stating that these people lack morals such as honesty and the want to work hard, that the benefits system encourages people to become single parents and that their offspring lack a role model due to the lack of a farther. Murray was supported in his argument by Dennis and Erdos (1992) whom stated that a ‘dismembered family’ exists because of increased cohabitation, relaxed attitudes to divorce, and men being able to escape their obligations, they stated that this resulted in crime and substandard parenting skills. Many of the people criticized by Murray (1990), Dennis and Erdos(1992), would in retrospect be happy to be able to free themselves from the poverty line, to be able to gain employment and labelling of single parenthood. Americans and the British struggling on the welfare system unable to see a light at the end of a very long tunnel (gawker. com/hellofromtheunderclass). Murray also stated that, there is an ever increasing black underclass, predominately made up of single mothers and men unwilling to work and criminals. He argued that payments from welfare made lone parenting possible, and encouraged benefit dependency rather than promoting labour earned wages, although Morris (1994) stated that automatic entitlement for welfare did not exist for unemployed people in the United States. Wilson (1997) argued that major shifts in the structure of the American, including the submersion of jobs and the decreasing demand for low skilled labour, contributed to a downward spiral for urban blacks (1987,1996). At the same time jobs where relocating away and the economic base shifted from manufacturing to the service sector, more jobs began requiring formal education and credentials that many inner – city residents lacked. He says that those that have been successful have moved out of the ghetto’s, and leaving those that are unsuccessful behind, he also thought the term ‘underclass’ should be abandoned as it is used to blame disadvantaged individuals for their problems and be changed to the ‘ghetto poor’ (Holborn, Burrage and Langley, 2009). Giddens had a more economic theory view of the underclass. He sees them as workers whom tend to find jobs within the secondary labour market (low paid, in – secure jobs, with few prospects). Employers tend to recruit women and ethnic minorities into such jobs partly because of discrimination and prejudice. The underclass have more radical views, than the working class individual in secure employment. This view was supported by Castles and Kosack (1973) whom studied migrant groups and found that this was mainly due to discrimination in Britain. Murray has been heavily criticised for individualising and racialising the problems of poverty and pathologising the poor, and also demonising lone mothers. The Neoliberal views advocated more private measures for tackling the ecomonomymoving towards a ‘free market’. Bartholomew (2004) argues that the welfare state has caused harm to Britain he stated it; * Encourages unemployment by providing an income for individuals that don’t work * and that there are individuals that are working illegally whilst claiming benefit, incapacity benefit when the indidual is actually capable of work. * Creates incentives for those to commit fraud. * Creates instability by making lone parenthood affordable. But he also agreed that there is a structural argument (Holborn, Burrage and Langley, 2009). Murray argued that the benefit system should be changed to rid the disincentives of marriage and to discourage lone parenthood. Single mothers can easily live off benefits and according to Murray males whom farther children can easily get out or their responsibilities to family life, therefore pregnant women should be forced to marry and the benefits should be completely cut for unmarried women. The New Right Solutions are as follows; Reduce the welfare spend and move away from universal benefits to reduce the dependency culture (McLaughlin and Muncie, 2001). Argues that means tested benefits cause the underclass because if people take low paid jobs, they will lose jobs and will end worse off. Morris (1993) examined poverty in Hartlepool and found that the attitudes of the unemployed were not different and they wanted to work. She argues that the concept of the ‘underclass’ is too simplistic to explain. Blackman (1997) studied the homeless in Brighton and found that they did not reject society’s values, they needed homes and jobs, he stated that the so called ‘under class’ are victims of society whose behaviour will change when they are given genuine opportunities for change. Feminists strongly challenge Murrays arguments, highlighting that his discourse is firmly embedded in a patriarchal and elitist construction of the family based on sexual stereotyping; unemployment and crime as primarily of concern among young males, while illegitimacy is seen as damaging because of perceived negative impacts on young male children raised without a farther figure (Murray, 1990 and 1994; Bullen and Kenway 2004). Structural theorists state that poverty continue to  exist because society does not share its wealth fairly, it states that poverty can be explained by a structural society rather than the attitudes and behaviour of certain groups. Some disagreement about the reasons why society has failed to erase poverty, some say it is the failings of the welfare state others say it is disadvantage within employment opportunities. Sociologists have argued that the phrase ‘social exclusion’ should be used for those in poverty rather than ‘underclass’. They state that the name means disadvantaged rather than to blame. Thus including a broader range of people who are unable to take part in society because of multi disadvantage and not just poverty. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has identified the following factors; * Lack of resources * Lack of employment * Lack of learning opportunities * Experience of health inequality * Lack of decent housing * Disruption to family life * Living in a disadvantaged neighbourhood (Downes and Rock, 2003) To conclude, the argument that Wilson (1997) puts forward that rather than ethnic minorities making up the ‘underclass’ they are more disadvantaged due to lack of training, and employment opportunities. They are being held back, denying them economic success and reinforcing racial stereotypes, would be predominately the most convincing as this outlook could cross reference with a number of sociological theory’s, that it is not a matter of blaming an individual group, but more to find the solution to the problem as a whole issue, and that while Murray was using his theory to lay blame on a particular group rather than looking at the issue as a whole the issues were gradually getting worse.

Not all style guides agree as to what should be considered a major word. Most agree that nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and subordinating conjunctions (if, because, as, that, etc.) are major words and should always be capitalized. That leaves articles (a, an, the), prepositions, and coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, for, nor) in the minor league where lowercase prevails. Unfortunately, as is frequent with arbitrary rules, style guides don’t always agree. Both the Chicago Manual of Style and the AP Stylebook agree that articles (a, an, the), and coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, for, nor) should not be capitalized unless they are the first or last word of the title, but when it comes to prepositions, they differ. CMOS says never capitalize a preposition unless it is the first word in the title. AP says leave short prepositions in lowercase, but capitalize prepositions and conjunctions of four or more letters. How to Set a Workplace Vacation Policy: Consider Legal Requirements Although vacation time seems like a standard occurrence in the American workforce, employers actually have no legal obligation to offer their employees any vacation time at all. However, the majority of business owners understand the health benefits of offering their employees vacation time, and they aim to set policies that fit their businesss operations. While time off for vacation is not federally enforced, employers are legally obligated to provide certain employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave each year under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), a labor law which was passed in 1993. Those are all worthy things, but they may lead to different conclusions. Traditional vacation policies, Kane says, have stemmed from policies established by labor union contracts, which will grant employees a certain amount of time off depending upon the length of time they have worked for the company. And, in addition to the yearly allotment of vacation time a company decides to grant employees, many businesses offer additional time off for personal days, sick days, and national or religious holidays, like New Years Day, Independence Day, and Christmas Day. An employer has the option of giving employees two weeks off for the first year, three weeks off after five years, and four weeks off for 10 or 15 years, Kane says. But, those are just some common schedules; some employees say two weeks for everyone. Accrued time off – additional sick days, PTO or vacation time that employees accumulate based on the length of time they have worked at a company – is also more prevalent now than it used to be. Rollover vacation days – unused vacation time from one calendar year that gets added onto next years allotment – may count as part of accrued time off, but it depends on the employer, Kane says: Some employers say you have to use your rollover days by March 30, or some date in the next year. Or, they will say you can accrue unused vacation time only up to so many hours, or for so many hours. One more factor to take into consideration when creating a vacation policy is to determine whether you feel that your business has key employees. If that is the case, you may want to construct separate policies to keep those employees satisfied for the good of the enterprise, Kane says. For instance, since many businesses have sales people who consistently bring money in, you may consider offering a vacation policy with a higher incentive to that group of people who are driving your business. However, if singling out groups of people within the company leaves other employees unsatisfied, you may be better off sticking to a universal policy. Kane says that many companies have a use it or lose it policy, which means that if an employee fails to use the vacation time they are entitled to in a given year, it becomes forfeited. Theoretically, doctors will tell you its good to take time off to regenerate, but that only way you can actually make [employees] take a vacation is just to tell them not to come into work, he says. Most vacation systems try to make that a part of the policy, but its enforced by the payroll department, rather than individual supervisors. An employer must also decide whether they want to include part-time employees in a vacation policy, or limit that option to full-time workers only. For some stores, their bread and butter are part-time employees, Kane says. I think its a general rule that employers whose workforce is part-time often [tell employees they] wont accrue vacation for working 20 hours a week or less. If an employee decides to abuse his or her vacation policy, however, the consequences can be dire, and may even result in termination. Typically, a companys human resources or payroll department will keep track of employee sick days and vacation days, and it will be up to them to report abuse to their manager or employer. How to Set a Workplace Vacation Policy: Get Employee Input Vacation time is one aspect of the benefits package that will be difficult to alter once it has been established, so its best to ask your employees what they hope to gain from the policy before its set in stone. A big mistake that employers make in creating a policy, Kane says, is setting guidelines based on what they heard worked for another company, rather than focusing on the needs of their own business and employees. One thing to remember is that if you decide to ask your employees what they want, you have to provide them with the proper education about potential plans so they can make a well-informed decision. Many philosophers have theorized social change through functionalism, conflict theory, and punctuated equilibrium. In the early twentieth century, Emile Durkheim along with the help of Talcott Parsons established the basis of the functionalist theory; known as the oldest yet still prominent theoretical perspective in sociology. â€Å"Functionalism can be summed up with one simple premise "the world is a system of interrelated parts, and each part makes a necessary contribution to the vitality of the system†(Functionalist Perspective of Sociology). Functionalists strive to explain the various parts of a society and their relationship through the organic analogy. The organic analogy refers to society as the organs of a living organism. These organs must be able to survive and function through a certain system much like that of a society. The functionalist view looks at society altogether as well as its interrelated parts and how they maintain the whole (Anthropological Theories). Early Childhood Education Past and Present Essay

In order to decide how past philosophies, theories and educational models have influenced present ideas and practices related to early childhood education, we must first decide where we would like to begin. I will start with the ideas of Aristotle, because I believe his ideas on â€Å"mimesis† or imitations are evident in the evolution of early education, and will always be an integral part of effective learning. Once we understand that children learn and practice what they see in others, we begin to realize the need for dedication and devotion from parents and teachers. Aristotle was a student of Plato who argued for the early removal of children from their parents so that they could be cared for in a school like setting. (Schwartz 1997) As we look back at history itself, we can see that the role of childhood education has been dependent upon the immediate needs and beliefs of a particular society. There have also been many individuals in the past 200 years who are responsible for creating theories and philosophies based on their observations of children and what is vital to them as they develop into adults. However, it is important that we recognize how new ideas are not formed independently, but built upon old ones. As educators, we must utilize what we notice to be effective, as well as the things that impacted us most as children in an educational setting. The strategies and philosophies that I’ve implemented in particular are borrowed from several individuals including Erikson, Vygotsky and Gardiner. Erikson’s psychosocial theory covers eight stages, each one built upon, and reliant on its predecessor. The first four are of greatest relevance, but the remaining four are worthy of a close look because it is important to know where you’re going when deciding upon the best way to get there. These stages also remind me of the importance of satisfying basic need, and of considering children as little people who need to believe in success before they can achieve it. It’s one of the reasons why I would occasionally go to recess with my students. I was able to observe how they treated and responded to others in a seemingly more relaxed, social setting. For some children, recess is by far the most stressful twenty minutes of the day. The incredibly minimal amount of time given to my students was another reason I felt it was necessary to attend. I could get a kick ball game set up so they could make the best of what little time they had. However, I must be honest, I still love to play, and demonstrating good sportsmanship and a competitive spirit to my kids was as important as the preparation for any test we had to look forward to. Lastly, I had a sixth grade teacher who used to do the same thing and I remember it vividly and extremely fondly. I find Gardiners’ theory of multiple intelligence extremely helpful while building confidence in kids whose gifts were not overly apparent on the field at recess. I have and will always encourage students to recognize and display these gifts while still maintaining a certain degree of humility. (Hyson 2004) I’ve always kept examples of completed activities inside and outside my classroom and anywhere else I could find space in order to, among other things, initiate discussions about pride as well as humility. Our classroom clearly demonstrated the fact that comfort and familiarity were held in high regard. An equal emphasis was placed on respect, and this is the word that was constantly spelled out on the board. As my class or one of my students showed an obvious lack of respect, one of the letters would be erased. They would be put back as we were respectful of one another, and if the word was entirely spelled out on Friday afternoon, we would have a â€Å"social gathering† for the last half hour of the day. If we were to walk into most, if not all early childhood educational settings, we would find many things that were initiated or influenced by past theorists or philosophers. We would notice blocks or other creative building materials. There would be areas to encourage cooperative learning, and most would reflect what is thought to be developmentally appropriate for the range of members in the class. When determining what types of play are developmentally appropriate, we need to consider all individuals, and the fact that differences will exist. Members of a class who are either gifted or struggling should not have to suffer because of what is thought to be developmentally appropriate. These differences should be expected, utilized and appreciated. Computers, for example, will run programs with varying degrees of difficulty depending upon what is developmentally appropriate for an individual. As concerns continue to grow over bridging the gap between early education students, government intervention has and will continue to grow. An increase in assessments is inevitable, and even smaller amounts of time will be devoted to active learning, exploration and play. The changes that in fact need to be made are those that reflect the ideas of the great minds of theorists who dedicated their lives in order to determine the most effective methods of early childhood education.

As a more general science, demography can and does study any dynamic living population. For those focused on human studies, some define demography as plainly the scientific study of human populations and their characteristics. The study of demography often leads to the categorization and segmentation of people based on their shared characteristics  or traits. The origin of the word further solidifies the studys relationship to its human subjects. How Demographics Are Used The use of demographics and the field of demography is widespread. Demographics are used by governments, corporations, and other non-government entities to learn more about a populations characteristics and the trends within that population. Governments may use demographics to track and assess the effects of their policies and to determine whether a policy had the intended effect or carried unintentional effects both positive and negative. Governments may use individual demographics studies in their research, but they also generally collect demographics data in the form of a census. Businesses, on the other hand, may use demographics to judge the size and influence of a potential market or to assess the characteristics of their target market. Businesses may even use demographics to determine whether their goods are ending up in the hands of the people the company has deemed their most important customer group. The results from these corporate demographics studies generally lead to a  more effective use of marketing budgets. Diversity in the Classroom Schools are the places where the children shape their personalities and behavior. Like a child who shapes his or her personal outlook, even the school will be shaped by diverse cultural practices and values of the society. In essence, schools also reflect the existing norms of the society for which they set up. Interrelated and closely bonded beliefs and values are very common the culture of the schooling. In this chapter, an attempt was made to relate the basic ideology that underlines the culture in the US with many core values and beliefs. In addition, a link was made to relate the basic ideology as a means of divulging the deeper meaning of culture. Child rearing is a very meaningful approach that one can use to reveal the deeper meaning of the culture. Rearing children in a classroom has a strong link with the underlying culture of diverse ethnic groups. These differences could be due to a number of reasons like: Students effort and dedication towards studies, Intelligence, skills and perceived smartness Familys social status in the society In a natal position, teachers may or may not visit each others classroom or they may or may not talk to each other regarding their teaching methods. In fact, classroom instruction delivered by teachers was private and confidential. School authorities ensured that new teacher inductees were formally socialized into this new culture. Next, will be the transitional position. During this position, teachers may never talk negative about a student. However, it is quite difficult to realize similar outcomes with all the instructional approaches used by the teachers. This issue resulted in a serious discussion about the existing relationship between the teaching approach and the student-learning outcome. Dialogues about individual teaching practices veered towards personal, although individual teachers were careful about assuming responsibility for learning outcome among students. These sessions always included provision of guidance and help about teaching methods and approaches. On the other hand, transformational position is the last position that emerges during the third year of the study. Diversity in Young Goodman Brown, Ethan Brand, and The Birthmark "... it is no delusion. There is an Unpardonable Sin!" , a quote by Ethan Brand that is at the root of many stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Nathaniel Hawthornes gloomy, dark style of writing is an emphasis on his theme of evil at societies heart. Writing about what he knew, Hawthorne described the puritan society in different periods of time and defined different characters but all connected through his style. The stories that exemplify the diversity of Hawthornes writing are "Young Goodman Brown", " Ethan Brand", and "The Birthmark". Having read these stories it is possible to become engrossed in the darkness that is portrayed and none is better than "Young Goodman Brown" . Young Goodman Brown, the character, is first introduced to us in the clearing of Salem village and we learn that he has faith in the goodness of the village and Faith for his companion as well. The people that we meet in Salem village in the first few paragraphs are just Goodman and Faith. These two characters are very important to understand for their surface characters or illusional characters. It is soon learned that Goodman Brown is not such a good man and later Faith shows us just as much false character. Goodman and Faith are not the only characters that are not all they seem to be. We come to meet more characters in the short story that are superficial as is the village itself. Goodman Brown leaves the bright, warm, goodness of his village to make a journey in the woods to meet a stranger. A good place to meet a stranger would be these surrounding woods of Salem for it is here that described by Nathaniel Hawthorne that "He had taken a dreary road,darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely stood aside to let the narrow path creep through, and closed immediately behind." and like the scheming mind of an evil person the dark woods leads one down the wrong pathway. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth Essay

Macbeth is a story consisting of very complex, intricate and unique characters. Two of which are Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. It has been constantly debated as to who among the two of them has a stronger character. In my opinion Macbeth has a stronger character. This I will justify as I go along with my argument. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth as mentioned above have several similarities and differences between them. The most common similarity they share is that they both a fickle minded and they can both be easily manipulated into doing/committing evil acts such as murdering a king just because 3 witched predicted that they would be king queen. Next, both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have a very commanding and authoritative personality which helps solidify the statements that either of them makes. In other words they are able to use their commanding personality to create trust and make people believe them. Lastly, they are both very loyal and charming hosts. They both impress their guests very well and are able to gather lots of praises and applaud for them no matter where they go. Lady Macbeth on the other hand has a few strong characteristics as well. She is able to manipulate Macbeths mind into doing her will easily. Next, she is very ambitions which makes her very determined to get whatever she wants. But all these so called strong characteristics in Lady Macbeth are more towards the negative side. So I think that it is not appropriate to call her as having a stronger character than Macbeth. Next I will explain why Macbeth is in my opinion the stronger character. There are many qualities that can be associated to people with strong characters but in my argument I have decided to highlight only a few major characteristics which are follows. Being courageous and honorable, thinking before acting, feeling remorseful for the bad acts he commits and lastly having courage to face the consequences of all his actions. Courage and bravery are 2 qualities which are synonymous with people of strong personalities. I believe that this is a very important quality to be reckoned with when identifying people with strong qualities because it in a way glorifies the character and gives more meaning to the word â€Å"strong†. So a good example to show this would be in the following extract from the story. For brave Macbeth–well he deserves that name– Disdaining fortune, with his brandish’d steel†¦ (Act 1 scene 1 conversation between sergeant and Duncan) We can clearly interpret from this quote that the sergeant refers to Macbeth as being a very valiant and strong warrior, he also says that Macbeth moves through the battle field fearlessly slaying all in his way. Another quality of Macbeth which makes his character stronger is his nature to think of the consequences of his actions. In the story Macbeth thinks of what would be the consequences he would have to face if he killed Duncan to become king. He finds out that firstly it is wrong to commit murder and also he finds out that if he kills Duncan he will have to live with a guilty conscience for the rest of his days. I believe that this quality is just as important as the above 2 because it shows that a â€Å"strong† character is able to think one step ahead before committing his actions, meaning that he knows whether what he is doing is right or wrong. We can see Macbeth showing this quality through the following lines. Cannot be ill, cannot be good: if ill. Why hath it given me earnest of success, Commencing in a truth? We see in thorough this quote that Macbeth is truly questioning as to whether or not the witches are right and whether or not he should believe them. Which helps solidify the point that he thinks before he acts. Another strong characteristic that Macbeth possesses is that he feels guilty for the bad actions that he commits which in our context is the killing of King Duncan and several other people. But I believe that this can also be seen as an act to courage in a way, because it takes extraordinary courage to commit murder and that too killing the King himself. Another way to view this is a positive act is that fact that Lady Macbeth forced Macbeth into committing this acting by challenging his manly hood, and it was because he wanted to keep his honour that he was forced to commit such a horrid act. On the other hand Lady Macbeth’s sole aim was to reap the benefits of this act. So I believe that Macbeth’s ability to show that he feels guilty for his actions and is willing to take an action to rectify those actions makes him a stronger character. So in conclusion I would like to state that Macbeth has a much stronger character than that of Lady Macbeth and that all the qualities that I have stated above make Macbeth a much stronger character than Lady Macbeth in all rights.
